Lecturer: F. Kucharski, ICTP

Lesson number 2 (F.Kucharski)

Role of the Ocean in Climate and Climate Change

In this lesson the teacher focuses on CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and the carbon cycle. Other main topics of this lesson are: how do greenhouse gases influence Earth’s surface temperature; the role of water and water vapour in the Earth System; the greenhouse effect. The possibility of abrupt climate changes is described, together with the possible causes and sources. Finally, the teacher explains how scientists model the Climate Systems and the problems related to such modelling.
