Lesson number 5 (R.Farneti)

Thermodynamics, Structure and Dynamics of the Oceans I

This lesson is a brief overview on the thermodynamics, structure and dynamics of the oceans. The goal of is to understand the basic physical properties of the Ocean, and its role in climate. The first topic covered is the large scale ocean circulation: wind-driven and thermohaline. The definitions of temperature, salinity and density in the oceans are shown. The vertical structure of the ocean (upper ocean, dee player, and bottom layer) is given.
